How Does a Dog Drink – and Why Is It So Sloppy?

Have you ever watched a dog drink? Of course you have, how could you not? Its like watching Shamu do tricks in the splash section at Sea World. Somehow, the darn dog seems to get water everywhere except in his mouth – and talk about backwash, ew! Dogs dont so much drink as they wash their faces in a slobber solution. Dodger is such a dog. Sometimes, when hes really thirsty, his owners have to mop the floor and towel his face – no joke.
Now, take a cat. Cats are so dainty and delicate. They lap up water with their tiny pink tongues, eye serenely closed. They carefully clean any droplets of water from their whiskers with their tiny paws and aw its just so adorable. India is such a cat. She is a Siamese, meaning shes extra prissy about everything – including drinking water delicately.
Process these images carefully, their obvious similarities: each is of a household pet hydrating itself, and their obvious differences: one is sloppy and the other is dainty. Heres a little something to blow your mind: the physics behind how those two animals get liquid from the bowl to their mouth is the same.
So, How Does It Work? To start out with, neither uses his tongue as a scoop, which is what was the previous accepted explanation for how a dog drinks. Each creature, Dodger and India, are masters of physics – or rather, their tongues are. It is a delicate balance between several laws of physics, namely that of gravity, that of inertia, and a few others that allow both India – a cat, and Dodger – a pooch to bring liquid to their mouths.
When Dodger drinks, his tongue touches the surface of the liquid, disturbing the surface tension, and causing the liquid to stick to it. When he brings his tongue back up into his mouth, a column of liquid comes with it. When the free-floating liquid column is at its highest point, Dodger closes his mouth before it starts to fall, therefore resulting in less liquid in one gulp. India does the exact same thing when she drinks – she just does it a bit more neatly.
It is a matter of hygiene that has bred this ignorance into our minds about the difference between the way cats and dogs drink. There is one difference perhaps between India and Dodgers drinking habits, and that would be – the shape of their respective tongues. When India drinks, she curves her tongue concavely, to ensure that only the tip touches the liquid, and no extra is splattered around anywhere or picked up. Dodger on the other hand, plops his tongue down in any old shape, sometimes concave, sometimes convex, and sometimes flat. It might make a mess – scratch that, it probably will, but he doesnt care, whereas India does.
Why Do They Like Drinking From Running Water?You may or may not have noticed some other sort of peculiar drinking habits that your pooch has – like drinking from the toilet or drinking running water from a faucet or hose. Though these have nothing to do with the physics of how dogs drink, it is another thing they share in common with cats. Cats and dogs both will drink from the toilet because it is cold. Some pets prefer cold water. To break them of the habit, try some ice chips into their bowl every once in while to keep it cold and refreshed. As for running water – it is not quite known why pets like Dodger and India like to drink running water – it is simply their preference. If your pet really loves it, you could think about picking up a doggie drinking fountain, rather than have to leave some water source running on and off.

old bucket fountains question by blah blah blah: what are these dreams trying to tell me? they’re a bit strange, and confusing.?
okay, this is going to get a little long.
so my next door neighbor is my age, & i’ve known him since i was like, 2. his sister & my friends have always teased me, saying we’re going to end up together, but i’ve NEVER had a crush on him, and Viceversa (as far as i know, anyway). and we’re both 16, so that’s saying something. we’ve never really been close. we played together when we were little, but that’s it. we’ll talk at the bus stop and walk home together, but it’s never gone further than that. but for the past year, at random times, i’ll have a dream about him. and keep in mind that he is the most popular guy in my school, a nation-ranked wrestler, and really popular w/ girls (he’s also very cocky, kind of niave, but he’s always been nice to me).
1st dream: i don’t remember much, it was a while ago, but it was set in our neighborhood. our houses back up to a green belt, and in the dream there was this statue/fountain of these children holding a bucket in the green belt. we would meet there and talk, and he had glasses (which he doesn’t have in real life), and he was very soft-spoken and gentle in the dream. eventually he kissed me. somehow we got into his room, & we were just sitting there, and he was playing a game, and his sister came in. we didn’t want her to tell anyone that we were together, and she was really happy that we were.
2nd dream: it was set in the 1930′s, and we were on a float made completely of rod-iron. there was a wrestling mat & my little brother was in a match on the mat. i don’t remember what happened after that. then we were walking down an old country dirt road, still dressed like we were in the 30′s, & barefoot. then he grabbed my hand & started swinging it as we walked, then he put his arm around my shoulder & started nuzzling my neck. i never pushed him away, encouraged him, or really even acknowledged him. i just kept walking & talking, like nothing was happening.
3rd dream: we were in drama class, and he was sitting next to me. he wouldn’t stop messing with me, and i kept telling him to stop talking. then he had to do some improv, and i had to hold one of the props, and the set was a full kitchen and dining room, with the dining room visible to the class, and the kitchen area blocked off by a wall (that’s where i was, holding a broom) then he came in there & started goofing off, and i couldn’t move. so i just stood there and laughed, frozen in place, while he kept dancing around me & stuff. then we went back to our seats, and he kept touching me. not in an inappropriate way, just like my leg or arm or head, and i just kept slapping his hand away & trying not to laugh.
4th dream: we were in his room on his bed, studying and talking, and he started crying about a girl (but it was in a really sad way, not in a “what a loser” way), and i was being really gentle w/ him & trying to comfort him. then we were at a mall, and we were both there alone, but separately. and we just kept running into eachother, & i’m not sure, but i think i was trying to leave, but i kept getting lost.
5th dream: it opened w/ us just getting off a boat, coming back from somewhere w/ a group of people and breathing heavy. he had a button down shirt on and some of his chest was exposed & there was a big scar across it, and i pointed it out, & he was just like “yeah, you got the pretty one” and brushed his thumb over a scar i had by my cheek bone and kind of smiled sadly, then we were talking about this book and how i needed to get it signed by the author (it was REALLY important that i saw the author), so i looked through the book and it was the most amazing book i’d ever seen, it was filled with paintings, but the paintings on the pages would change, and they looked like stained glass or something. so i went to see the auther, & he was really old, but looked like he was 20. and he just smiled at me for a long time & said “i’m so glad you have finally found me, i’ve been looking for you” and then the author signed my book & said something about me being beautiful. i took the book and the rest of the dream i was trying to get back to him (my neighbor) to show him the book because for some reason what the author signed was REALLY important to us, like it had a hidden meaning or something, and the whole time i was really excited & happy, like we’d found gold.
oh, and i had another dream where i was pregnant, & i think he might have been the father?
