10 Easy To Grow Vegetables for Backyard Gardening
Article by Amy C.
Everyone wants to have a backyard garden especially for fruits and vegetables. It’s nice to have freshly picked vegetables for dinner at the convenience of your own yard. Backyard vegetable gardening is the best way to develop a healthy food eating habit. With this, you are assured that the vegetables you eat are free from toxic chemical pesticides and fertilizers. May you decide to plant on garden planters or freshly cultivated beds; you are assured that during harvest time your crops are fresh, clean and healthy for the whole family.
However, growing your own vegetables can be difficult for starters. Soil condition, weather and “what to plant” are some of the concerns of new gardeners. You don’t want to invest money on seeds and seedlings that are difficult to grow. Worse, you don’t want to spend money on vegetables you don’t even like to eat.
To help you start your vegetable garden, here is a list of easy to grow and commonly eaten vegetables your garden should have.
Tomatoes – Tomatoes are the most popular plants to grow at a home vegetable garden. There are a lot of varieties to choose from, depending on where you want to plant them. They are very rich in essential nutrients such as Vitamins A, C and E, potassium, niacin and various antioxidants. Tomatoes are very easy to grow. They love the heat so they must be planted where the sun shines fully and with sufficient moisture.
Radishes – Taking just 4-5 weeks to full growth, radishes are one of the easiest vegetables to grow. This is an ideal plant for a beginner gardener. Radishes prefer a damp, colder climate and require very less maintenance so you don’t have to worry about it a lot. Radishes are a sufficient source of folic acid, magnesium, calcium and potassium.
Carrots – Carrots love light and sandy soils in a cooler climate. They grow perfectly under full sunshine. Carrots are very rich in vitamin A, antioxidants and dietary fiber.
Lettuces – This is a good crop for starters. These can be grown indoors or outdoors, in pots or in a patch. There are a lot of varieties that are best planted during the cool season.
Beets – These are one of the easiest vegetables to grow. Kids may enjoy them or might not. These are good to eat when boiled and eaten plain or tossed in salads. These vegetables are rich in betaine which has been proven to improve cardiovascular health.
Peas- This nutritious plant grow easily. They do not tolerate cold climate and thrive productively. Thus, be planted on a region with warmer condition.
Peppers – Bell peppers and hot peppers grew quite very well. They are very easy to grow on backyards, pots, or small containers. Seeds take a longer time to grow so it is advised to plant young seedlings. They grow fairly well in a warmer climate. Peppers are widely available and are commonly used on salads.
Green Beans – These prolific plants grow quite well and easy. They grow well in warmer seasons and do not when the soil is damp.
Onions – Onions can be grown from seeds but will take a long time. Instead, plant “onion sets” (small bulbs). They are very easy to grow especially with adequate compost. They are very rich in dietary fiber and vitamin C. They add a nice touch of flavor to dips, sauces and salads.
Zucchini – you only need one or two plants to start with and these will thrive productively. It is a very productive summer squash that is low on calories and has loads of potassium manganese and other essential nutrients.
Once you have checked your soil condition, decided what kind of garden you’re going to make and made your planting sites ready, it’s time to head off to the nearest nursery or home improvement shops to purchase your desired vegetable seeds or seedlings. Later, when things are going well it will be a perfect time for you to think of ways to decorate and maintain your garden. More plots for example, more plants, and decorations such as bamboo fountains, statues and such. Thus, make your garden not only a source of food but also of relaxation.
